Event Design Lessons From a Celebrity Fashion Disaster
I’m sitting on a plane just now at Heathrow on route to Frankfurt for a business trip. We’re half-way through what looks likely to be a two hour delay so I thought I’d comment on an amusing pic a colleague sent me:
I’ll plead ignorance on the actress in question but it seems that Rachel McAdams is getting some stick in the gossip columns for a rather amusing fashion disaster. The stunning Rachel is apparently starring with Harrison Ford in a big rom-com which premiered in Berlin the other day. It seems that Rachel’s stylist (I’m assuming she has one – don’t all Hollywood starlets?) had his or her eye off the ball when choosing this red gown for her to wear.
Not that there’s anything wrong with the dress. In fact, quite the opposite – I think she looks gorgeous. No, where she went wrong is that the she blends in perfectly with the red carpet and to make matters worse, all the advertising boards were red as well.
Rachel has a bit of a Nicole Kidman, porcelain look going on and according to OK Magazine, she was only saved by the black trim across her waistband and neckline.
I’d further add that in football manager parlance, her stylist’s coat is hanging on a shaky nail.
The lesson in all of this?
Never fight with your surroundings when your planning your design. Instead, be sympathetic to the space you’re working in when contemplating your design. Using the Rachel analogy, if you were working in a hotel with bright red wallpaper, a bright red table design incorporating red tablecloth and chair covers would most likely give your guests’ a sore head the moment they enter the room.
