A prestigious event for a financial institution‘s top gobal investors in Edinburgh’s stunning National Gallery…

Brief

Our client wanted to create a prestigious themed event for 30 important investors from around the world in Edinburgh’s stunning National Gallery.

The evening

The lavish theme for the evening was Dangerous Liaisons, which was perfect for the opulent setting of the beautiful interior.

Our challenge was to reflect the setting of the popular movie, which is set in 18th Century France, and add a quirky touch with a contemporary edge to it.

A dramatic line of flaming flambeaux created an atmospheric walkway as guests entered the entrance foyer of the gallery which was dressed with two magnificent tables featuring large ornate gilt framed mirrors. On each of these tables, there were beautiful flowers in cut crystal glasses. Soft draping completed the set and provided a backdrop for feature lighting the floral displays.

Banqueting managers in full period costume greeted the guests and led them through to the gallery for drinks and canapés.

Drinks reception

Guests were welcomed with champagne served from crystal glasses on silver trays, whilst a trio of classic musicians in elaborate costumes, played period music.

An outstanding ten-foot high floral display was centred in the reception area, which was fabulous for photographs and a real talking point.

Occasional tables placed around the room were covered with gold chenille cloths and hurricane lamps filled with bright flowers. Impressive hand drawn calligraphy table plans were displayed on two ornate gilt easels.

The piece de resistance of the drinks reception were The Count and Countess, two living statues on plinths who came to life to lead the guests through for dinner.

Dining

For the dining table, 88 Events manufactured a bespoke gold damask tablecloth which was complimented by gold chair covers and broad damask seat ties.

At each place setting, guests found a bespoke, hand painted vibrant floral china charger plate, with a quirky bright fuchsia pink linen napkin finished with a silver napkin ring. Personalised calligraphy menus were on handmade paper. Cut crystal glassware was in keeping with the styling of the era and added sparkle to the table.

Terrariums overflowing with beautifully coloured flowers and greenery, small hand tied bunches in cut crystal glasses, and period style cake stands dripping with lavish fruit and chocolates filled the length of the forty-two foot long dining table.

Entertainment

All of the waiting staff were attired in smart black tails and coloured waistcoats in keeping with the era. During dinner, an authentic harpsichord turned the classical trio into a quartet who performed classical pieces whilst occasional delighting the guests with versions of modern songs by the likes of Oasis and Queen!

The grand finale to the amazing evening saw guests being collected by a huge fleet of classic vintage cars. Guests were likened to “children in a sweet shop” as they chose their favourites to chauffeur them back to their hotels.
